Around the school, celebrations of Black history illuminate the foyer, Ita Ford, and even outside the guidance office. Black History Month is in full swing at Fontbonne!
The SAC DEI Committee worked together to create a “Black Herstory” bulletin board showcasing iconic and inspirational Black women throughout history. Ita Ford is decorated with posters of inspirational Black leaders from James Baldwin to Fred Hampton, Malcolm X, and many more!
Senior DEI chairperson Tianna Williams also spearheaded the “Black Hair History” display in the foyer set with Black hair products and hairstyles. Their history and significance within the Black community was detailed beside the items. She says, “This exhibit is made to empower and shine a light on the beauty of Black hair. I hoped the display would help people learn about Black women and their beautiful hair.”
Beyond that, the Global Citizenship Club partnered with the SAC DEI Committee to celebrate Black musicians from jazz to rap. By showcasing and celebrating all these vibrant parts of Black history, like music, civil rights leaders, and accomplished Black women, the DEI Committee hoped to show Fontbonne all that Black History has to offer.
Through highlighting the captivating music and the rich history of Black hair, we hoped that these installations would catalyze positive dialogue, learning, understanding and most importantly appreciation.
Finally, to formally celebrate the event, on Wednesday, February 7th, the SAC DEI Committee hosted a mini “cookout” with fan favorites like baked mac and cheese, cornbread, and so much more!
Here’s to another year of celebrating the present, honoring the past, and paving the way for continued positive change at Fontbonne! Happy Black History Month!
