The Fontbonne basketball program is slightly different this year, as Varsity Head Coach Steve Oliver retired at the end of last season. Former Assistant Coach Mike Sammon has taken on Oliver’s role as the Varsity Head Coach with Bob Atanasio, former JV Head Coach, as his assistant.
The basketball program also welcomed some new faces in the coaching positions. Coach Atanasio passed on the torch of JV Head Coach to Brittany McDonough. McDonough played Division II collegiate basketball for the Chesnut Hill College Griffins. Another new face that was recently welcomed into the Fontbonne family is Chanel Jemmott, who has assumed the position of assistant coach to McDonough. Jemmott was a highly decorated player at Brooklyn College, where she was nominated for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year.
On November 5th, our basketball team returned home to the gym. Players new and old donned smiles on their faces as they made their way into the gym for the first day of tryouts. Tryouts for the 2022-2023 season were a success as coaches were blown away by the hustle that our Bonnies put in on the court.
The Varsity team is “quite young, but if we put the effort in, our team will be a force to be reckoned with,” according to Coach Atanasio. The 12-person team consists of 2 Seniors, 9 Juniors, and 1 Sophomore. Returning Varsity team member, Kristen Russo ‘24, believes that “although the team is very different from last year, I believe that once the team begins to gel, it will all fall into place.”
The team has a lot of work ahead of them, but expectations are high amongst these hardworking, talented Bonnies. The JV and Varsity teams have their first game of the season on Sunday, November 27th, against Sacred Heart Academy. Good luck Bonnies!
