On Saturday, October 28, when the freshmen cross-country team competed in the Brooklyn/Queens - New York Sectional cross-country Championships, they placed second, winning the first-ever plaque for the track team.
Five runners make up the team, each competing in the 2500-meter race in Van Cortlandt Park. The starting line is in the middle of the park on the field. The course wraps around the trails and into the woods. In the wooded area, lofty hills and rocky paths lie ahead. At the end of the race, medals await the runners who make the top 25.
Scoring is based on the total of each runner's finish place, Evelyn Smargiassi (9th place) led the freshman team, followed by Scarlett Shin (13th), Carina DiToro (16th), Charlie Varbero (28th) and Ava DiMaggio. (31st) Their total score was 97 points putting them in 2nd place behind St. Francis Prep with 60 points. As Coach Paul emphasizes, “Running is an individual endeavor but cross country is a team sport.” He has been the coach for a few years and always pushes the girls to do their best. The freshman track team truly came together to win this plaque.
Congratulations to the cross-country team for winning second place in the championships and making school history.
