After spring break, Fontbonne Hall Academy’s eSports team will start gaming again. Funny enough the eSports team, which trains on Wednesdays and has gaming competitions on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the foyer, needs more players. Aside from needing more players, the team will still be back in action and would love for people interested in gaming or gaming competitions to join the team.
For those of you who are confused about Fontbonne’s eSports team, it is similar to watching/playing a professional athletic event, but people would see video gamers compete against one another instead of in a physical contest.
If you join the team, you will not only be playing in competitions against other schools, coed and non-coed, but also play for chances to win prizes. You will also become good at strategic planning, collaboration, leadership, effective communication, and performance abilities. As one of the members of the Fontbonne eSports team, I can guarantee that I have improved at these skills.
Zoe Yeung '23, a senior on the eSports team, said that she joined the team because one of her friends wanted to do it and because she enjoys playing video games. "Although I primarily play PC games, and this season we are only using the Nintendo Switch, it is still a great chance for me to advance my gaming abilities. Being a team member does improve my ability to communicate and work well with others, just like how it is with physical sport.”
As for the games played by the eSports team, when the team first started out back in 2021-2022 school year, the only game that the team took part in was Rocket League, a video game about motorized soccer that Psyonix created and released.
Back then, the team would only play on computers in the computer lab. But with a new year came new games as well as a console.
After saying goodbye to participating in Rocket League and playing on computers, the team switched to two new games and now plays on the Nintendo Switch.
Splatoon 3, which is one of the new games, is a third-person shooter that Nintendo created and released. Players engage in combat utilizing weaponized ink to "splat" opponents and cover ground.
The other new game is Mario Kart, which is a kart racing game that Nintendo also created and released. Gamers drive and race go-karts as their favorite Mario characters while utilizing a variety of power-ups.
If you are still deciding whether to join the eSports Team, email or speak with Mr. Somma, Mr. Petric, and Mr. Surdyka, the team's coaches. Being a member of the team is enjoyable and fulfilling. Also, you can meet others who share your passion for video games and create new friends.
