On November 7th, Fontbonne Against Cancer hosted the Dig Pink Volleyball Game. The purpose of the event was to bring the school together as a whole to donate and support the cause of fighting breast cancer. As a way to motivate people to donate, a volleyball game was planned between students and teachers.
To help raise money for breast cancer, bracelets and t-shirts with the color pink, representing breast cancer, were sold. Students took their time to volunteer and sell bracelets for $2 each during their lunch periods or resources. Students and teachers were also given the opportunity to buy shirts for $20 to wear to the volleyball game and to also support the cause.
The Fontbonne Against Cancer club also hosted a Pink Out dressdown in which faculty and students were able to show their support for breast cancer by dressing down in all pink.
Mr. Scheidt, the campus minister and religion teacher here at Fontbonne Hall Academy, predicted before the game that “The teachers are going to win. As long as I’ve been at Fontbonne, I have not witnessed the teachers losing.”
Right after school, all the students and teachers gathered together in the gym to warm up and prepare for the game. The game began, and after five minutes in the first set, the teachers were in the lead. A supportive crowd of students and teachers were on the bleachers cheering the teams on. But the students caught up and ended up taking the first set.
The second set started with the varsity volleyball team joining in on the fun. To even things out, their coach joined the faculty side. Even with all their efforts, the teachers were able to still win by two points for the second set. Since both the teachers and students won a game, a tie-breaker occurred, which resulted in the teachers winning the whole game.
Ms. DiCarlo, moderator of the Fontbonne Against Cancer Club and math teacher, hosted the game, and she stated, “I thought that the event was a really great turnout. It was nice to see girls play and sell shirts and bracelets. It was such a fun event and everyone who attended had a fun time; it showed a sense of community here at Fontbonne. It was nice to see how many girls signed up for the club and see how many girls wanted to fundraise for such an important cause. I think it was so funny to watch and everyone loved watching the faculty play, shoutout to Dr. de Carvahlo. It shows that we can work hard at school and also have fun outside of school.”
Ava Berardelli, president of the Fontbonne Against Cancer club, who helped coordinate the event stated, “It was an amazing experience coordinating the Students vs. Teachers annual Dig Pink Volleyball Game. We fundraised $1,500 selling t-shirts and baked goods, along with a Pink Out dress down. It was very rewarding seeing everyone laugh and smile while cheering on their classmates and teachers.”
Overall, the students at Fontbonne Hall Academy did an amazing job at fundraising a lot of money for breast cancer and playing a fun game in support of it.
