Is the Library a “Library”?

Molly Fox '26

In the Foyer building, the mysterious room 102 is known as the library. Most of its mystique stems from the fact that there are many shelves that line the wall, but no books on them. People call this room the library, but is it really?

The book cases consist of very few books, mainly starting at the Holy Bible and ending at Harry Potter. However, it could be argued that room 102 is a popular resource area and a productive space, which provides a library like feel. Another term commonly used for this spacious room is the student lounge. It has desks, comfortable chairs, and many spots for girls do work.

There is much debate between whether or not it people should refer to it as the library or student lounge. One student says, “I believe that room 102 is a student lounge. Most of the time students use this room to decompress and finish some of their work on the comfy chairs provided. The scenery, like the pop art made by students, also makes the room feel more like a lounge than a library.”

Another student commented, “I think other names would work better than ‘library’ because it is not particularly used as a library currently. No one takes out books or really pays mind to the few books there, but people do like to do their work and ‘lounge’ there. I think lounge is a better term.”

What do you think, is room 102 a lounge or a library?
