Lacrosse is one of the many spring sports that Fontbonne plays. There is both a JV and a Varsity team. The coach of the Junior Varsity team is Romeo Petric and the coach of Varsity is Mr. Cleary.
These past few years, Fontbonne has been working towards creating a larger lacrosse program. This year, counting both teams, there are about 70 girls who are on lacrosse. This is just about the size of the entire sophomore class. I think that it is safe to say that the program has become quite a big deal here at Fontbonne.
Recently, both teams had their first game. This took place on March 21, 2023, at Aviator. Even though both teams lost, they played great games.
Romeo, who is the JV lacrosse coach, explained that he is “very excited for this season.” He is happy that we all get to be outside after a long winter of being inside.
Many of the girls on JV have never played lacrosse before. Our coaches work hard to make sure that everyone feels included. They are open to teaching anyone how to play, as long as they are willing to put in the effort.
Grace Mitchell, who is a freshman that has no experience playing lacrosse said, “I love lacrosse. It’s a lot of fun and all of the girls that play are so nice.”
Toni Marie Fichter ‘25 explained, “I’m super excited for my first lacrosse season, but I am very upset because I was unable to play in the first game because I am injured.”
She hopes to play in the next game. She was at the first game, even though she could not play. “Everyone looks like they are having so much fun and I can’t wait to get in a game,'' explained Toni.
Caitrina Mullaly ‘25, who is the captain of junior varsity along with Grace Murphy and me, said that the team “has a lot of potential.”
She continued to say that “it will take a lot of work but I think winning is doable.”
The members of the JV team aren't the only people excited about this season. The varsity team is also ecstatic. Senior Ava Mollagan is “so pumped'' that this season has started. Ava has recently been named captain of the team. She explained that “It’s gonna be the best season yet.”
Olivia Bradley, who is also a senior, agreed with Ava and said that lacrosse is “so much fun.” She is the goalie on the varsity team. Although she is happy about the season starting, she doesn’t want it to end. As a senior, it is her last season. This is a bittersweet moment for her and all of the other players that will be graduating.
Overall, it seems that this season will be very successful. The whole school is excited to see what this season will bring.
