From October 22 through November 7, Fontbonne’s National Honor Society held a school-wide book drive, collecting gently used books to donate to shelters and organizations in need.
NHS is a committee in Fontbonne supporting academically excellent students and participating in acts of service for the community. Coordinated by Mrs. Sosa and Mr. Somma, these juniors and seniors share in the mission to help as many people as possible.
This particular initiative was directed towards young kids to teenagers, and students were asked to bring in any gently used books, whether picture or chapter books. When asking Mr. Somma, he said his and Mrs. Sosa’s hopes and intentions with the drive were to, “always encourage a love of reading.”
When thinking about all the books we have readily at our fingertips, we don’t realize what it might be like to want to read, but not have access to many books. In a similar idea, books sustain a child’s frame of imagination, establishing enhanced creative thinking through words, pictures, and getting them out of their comfort zone with millions of different topics to choose from - one of the reasons this topic is so important to the NHS and other students and teachers at FHA.
These books were distributed to the Queens Library and the students of P.S. 127, who can now enjoy these books during classes throughout the school day, inspiring a more fun way to learn for these kids. The Brooklyn Book Bodega, an organization that distributes books to children and teenagers throughout our borough, will also partake in NHS’s endeavor, helping us reach farther areas in need within our borough.
Mr. Somma also applauded the success of the drive in the following statement: “I think it was very successful. We got books for readers of all ages. The NHS members were very generous and so was everyone else.”
In my opinion, this practice was the definition of wholesome and a great way to give during this Thanksgiving season. We have high expectations and excitement for what NHS will do next!
