Teacher Feature: Ms. Dowling

Paraskevi Delengos '24

Ms. Lily Dowling, an English teacher here at Fontbonne Hall, is a newcomer to the school's staff. During the pandemic, Ms. Dowling came to Fontbonne and found an available position for maternity leave when she wanted to go back to teaching.

Ms.Dowling, inspired by her aunt who was a teacher, decided to follow in her aunt's footsteps and become one herself. When it came to her undergraduate and graduate education, Mrs.Dowling chose Suffolk University (in Boston) and Teachers College (in New York). It was in college, while pursuing dual degrees in English and education, that she discovered she had a knack for teaching.

In response to a question about whether Ms. Dowling wanted to teach forever or whether she saw herself in another position, she said, "I think I would want to teach for as long as I possibly could, until I get jaded and tired, which hopefully never happens." She expressed the love she had for teaching and would not want to be anything else.

In her conversation with me, Ms. Dowling shared her experiences growing up, including how she grew up in a small town outside of Boston and how she didn't appreciate it as much while living there. But as she grew older and visited, she realized how fortunate she was to have grown up where she did. In the town, she could see her own personal experiences as well as how it was a really lovely location to live.

Ms. Dowling enjoys her job at Fontbonne, and she, as well as the rest of the Fontbonne community, hopes that she will be able to continue working here for some time. We are delighted to have Ms. Dowling as a member of the Fontbonne family.
