The National Honor Society hosted the NHS Toy Drive for Catholic Charities from December 1st to December 16th.
The purpose of this drive was to give the opportunity for students to donate Christmas gifts to children in need, with the hope of putting a smile on their faces and making their Christmas special.
Students in NHS worked hard to create angel ornaments with the children’s names and suggested gifts on them. These angels were then put on the Christmas tree in the foyer for students to choose a gift to donate and put the nicely wrapped present under the tree.
Ms. Winslow, the chairperson of the English department and moderator of NHS, stated that “The National Honor Society has partnered with Catholic Charities for quite a few years. The toy drive is able to bring as much joy to the giver as it does to the recipient. Our students get very excited about choosing their ‘angel(s)’ and bringing in their gifts. Ms. Sosa and I have tried to bring our participation to a whole new level. We've been asking for one hundred names both last year and this year and we've been very happy with our students' participation.”
Ms. Sosa, who teaches English 10 Honors and English 12 and is also a moderator of NHS, stated that "The Catholic Charities Toy Drive is one of my favorite NHS events. NHS members handmake ornaments for the tree and the entire Fontbonne Hall community comes together to purchase gifts for children who would otherwise not have presents. It is a testament to the generosity of our school community and a wonderful way to spread the mission of all-inclusive love through this holy season."
Sofia Giudice '23, the president of NHS, stated, “The NHS Toy Drive has been a tradition we take part in every year. All of the students and faculty of the school are asked to donate gifts for a child in need during the holiday season. It is a terrific way to give back to the community by helping those less fortunate. It is a great feeling for all NHS members and members of the FHA community to make a child's holiday just a little bit brighter. Donating toys is something simple that we participate in to help those in need. We have partnered with Catholic Charities as we do every year and have been given about 100 children to provide gifts for. We hope to meet that goal like we have in years past and the outcome has already been so great. I can't wait to see all of those gifts underneath the tree which will put a smile on children’s faces during this holiday season.”
Overall, the students at FHA are one big family, who love helping those in need. Christmas will hopefully be a little more special for all the kids that received presents from NHS and students at FHA who donated.
