On December 2, 2022, Fontbonne was graced with the presence of Bishop Robert John Brennan, as well as many alumnae, and the Sisters of St. Joseph. A Mass was held in commemoration of Sister Ita Ford, M.M.
Students of all grades got to learn about Ida Ford’s life in the days prior to the Mass. Sister Ita Ford graduated from Fontbonne in 1957 and lived a life of Christ. On December 2, 1980, she was martyred for her faith. We honor her emotionally as well as physically every time we enter our campus building named for her.
However, that was not the only reason Mass was celebrated. There was also a commissioning of Eucharistic ministers: Ava Berardelli, Olivia Bradley, Victoria Bruno, Ava Mollaghan, and Jennifer Sarji. These exemplary young women were given the opportunity to offer the Host to the members of our school community alongside the Bishop.
“Being commissioned by the Bishop was a very rewarding experience. Growing up, I've always seen the Eucharistic ministers at my parish and always wanted to become one to strengthen my bond with God,” said Ava Berardelli.
After commissioning the Eucharistic ministers, there was also the installation of the emeritus faculty, class of 2022. The Emeritus Faculty Award is presented to those who have served the Fontbonne community for many years in more ways than one. This year it was presented to S. Eileen Agoglia, Cathy Barton, and Anne Rafferty for their excellence. Ms. Connolly presented this award to S. Eileen Agoglia, Mrs. Duggan presented it to Mrs. Barton, and Carol Fell presented it to Ms. Rafferty.
“Mrs. Barton is most certainly a role model for me. I began teaching at Fontbonne straight out of college in the Fall of 2008. I worked closely with Mrs. Barton teaching Algebra 1 with her as well as Geometry. Over the years, Mrs. Barton and I shared courses together and worked closely on lesson plans, exams, and curriculum planning. The NY State Regents curriculum changed three times since I first began teaching, and every time Mrs. Barton and I would dive into the new curricula together. It was an honor to present her with the Emeritus Faculty Award,” said Mrs. Duggan.
To end the Mass, we sang the “Servant Song” together, which is one of Fontbonne’s long-standing traditions. The song began with the faculty. Following them, the seniors joined in and then the juniors helped finish the song.
“The energy in the gym was electric! It was special to have so many special members of our community together in one place. That's what Mass is supposed to be about – a celebration of our community, past and present. Stories like S. Ita Ford's continue to inspire us, just as the Gospel inspires us to live lives in service to one another,” said Mr. Scheidt.
Following the Mass, there was a beautiful reception held for the Bishop, the Sisters of St. Joseph, and the members who participated in the Mass. Alumnae were able to reminisce about old Fontbonne memories. Students were also able to speak to the Bishop about our lives and Fontbonne traditions. We ended our discussion with a prayer led by the Bishop himself.
“I was instrumental in preparing the reception for the Bishop and guests by enhancing our beautiful library and lounge space with seasonal decor and presenting a delicious breakfast. The gathering was a chance for personal conversations, photos, and memories shared by all: the Bishop, the Sisters of St Joseph, our newly inducted Faculty Emeritae, our ministers of the Holy Eucharist, and invited guests,” said Mrs. Maldari, who organized much of the day.
To end Bishop Robert John Brennan’s visit, a few students, including myself, were able to give him a brief tour of the school. We eventually made our way to the Science Suite in the Ita Ford building to be blessed by the Bishop. This was a great way to end the day, and we hope to welcome the Bishop back soon!
Jacqueline,
You captured the enthusiasm and excitement of the day. It was great to relive it in your article.
