The First Hoorah: Sports Night as Freshmen

Emma Berardelli '26

Sports Night 2023 is officially done! After being a main event in the school community for months, it came and went. This past March 25th Fontbonne students, faculty, staff, alumni, and more joined together at OLPH to experience the first “real” Sports Night since before COVID.

Each class, Freshmen to Seniors, brought their all and were in it to win it, though only one year could win. The Seniors ended up winning with a whopping score of 353 points in all!

I had a unique experience with Sports Night as a Freshman. It was both mine and my sister, Ava Berardelli’s, first Sports Night ever, though our experiences were completely different.

Speaking for the Freshmen, it was definitely a challenge at first. However, after putting our minds and hearts together, we were finally able to connect as a grade. We met some rough times, including class participation and even excitement for Sports Night itself.

Despite those setbacks, our year coordinators and captains alike jumped right in and learned as time passed. After going through many possible themes, we settled on Fright Night Freshmen we truly spooked the competition. Featuring hit songs such as “Thriller”, “Monster Mash”, “Calling All the Monsters” and more, the crowd appeal was through the roof of the large OLPH gym on 6th avenue.

We, the Freshmen, dedicated our performance to the Senior Class and for many reasons. The main reason being that they took time out of their busy schedules to help our class at practices. They offered sagacious guidance and helped solve mini and mega problems, while never giving up on us.

We truly depended on them, even though this too was their first “real” Sports Night ever! Captains from Senior year worked hand in hand with the Freshmen year captains. Our overall captains, Lucy Kuhlmann and I, Emma Berardelli, were lucky enough to have their support.

Although we didn’t take home the win, we lived out an experience as valuable as one. Everyone’s mindsets have shifted, and excitement is overflowing already for next year’s Sports Night Season.

We cannot wait to see what next year has in store for our class, but until then congratulations to the well-deserving Senior Class!
