As of October 6, 2022, the new school labs were finally open for student use, after being off-limits for almost a month.
In addition to the labs being built, the whole second floor of Ita Ford, consisting of the hallway and bathroom was reconstructed and renovated. The construction of the labs first began at the end of last school year, at the start of summer. Throughout the summer, Dr. Herron, alumnae, teachers, and workers worked hard to make the labs amazing and technologically advanced.
The main reason for the creation of the new labs was to get new and advanced technology for the student body to use. The first week the labs opened, I decided to see how they looked. I was amazed to see that the FabLab had a 3-D printer, a desktop computer, a Triumph board, a glass whiteboard, charging outlets on the table, and a big new table with chairs.
The science lab had curvy tables that were gray and black back-less chairs, with charging outlets on the top and sides of the table, and the room had a dark blue theme. The second science lab had mainly lots of chairs with white circular tables that had charging outlets on them. There was a red and grey theme, and the tables were two circles separated by a bar-shaped table. The shape of the tables reminded me of two atoms bonded or held together by covalent bonds.
Something that stood out to me after observing all three lab rooms on the second floor of Ita Ford was that each room had a scientific quote on the wall, a different theme, and a glass window that allowed me to see into each of the labs.
Just as I left the labs, I ran into Olivia Bodnar ‘23 in the hallway and asked her what she thought about the new labs. She stated, “ I think the labs are pretty cool and I like how big they are. It is definitely an upgrade from last year's labs. Last year’s labs consisted of only one room and you could only enter from one entrance despite there being two. In terms of the stools to the chairs, I would say that the chairs are a mini upgrade from the stools because the stools had no back support whereas the new chairs have very small back support. I am pretty sure that everyone feels the same way about the new chairs, because we are all in need of back support and the mini back support is still not enough. Overall, the labs are a cool edition to Fontbonne.”
I feel that the labs look amazing and I can’t wait to see the whole school using them more as time goes on. I am truly grateful to everyone in the Fontbonne community for working so hard to make this possible and for doing what is in the best interest of the students.
