On Wednesday, November 22, Fontbonne Hall held our first Turkey Bowl in Shore Road Park. Yes, it is the season of giving thanks to family, friends, and all that we love. Though, at Fontbonne, we like to kick off our Thanksgiving break with a friendly competition.
Before the game, all students and faculty gathered in the gymnasium for our annual Thanksgiving mass, led by Father Falce of St. Patrick’s Church. As a school that values a closely connected student and faculty body, we took part in the celebration of the Eucharist to praise all that upholds the core principles of Fontbonne Hall.
Along with this, the Magnify and Respect clubs organized and shipped out 25 Thanksgiving baskets! With charitable food and beverage donations from all FAs, Fontbonne managed to feed over 20 families in need.
Furthermore, all FAs enjoyed breakfast together before the flag football game commenced. There was a slight weather scare before we headed to the field, but thankfully, the game went on.
It might not have compared to the NFL, but it sure brought the crowds and athletes of Fontbonne Hall together in cheers. Our referee, Mr. Cleary even said, “I think this will be the start of something new and good.”
For the first half of the game, the blue and red teams were mixed with freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. However, after the red team took a large lead with QB Joan Anastasiades ‘25, the teachers stepped in.
As halftime came to a close, Mrs. Bruzzese, Mr. Loftus, Mr. Mckoy, Mrs. Duggan, and Mr. Somma were ready to play. Making an impressive interception and a few throwdowns, quarterback Mrs. Bruzzese seemed to be getting the blue team back in the game.
Pre-game, Mr. Loftus excitedly said, “I am ready to play… [and] I am absolutely ready to beat the students.” Though, despite his best efforts, the red team was victorious.
Joan Anastasiades said, “It feels good” to come out on top.
Although some won and some didn’t, all the students and teachers who played showed great sportsmanship. “We could’ve gotten that win,” Mr. Loftus said, “but it was fun no matter what.”
Likewise, the spectators of this intriguing game showed similar engagement. The current inhabitants of Fontbonne Hall were accompanied by a few alumnae from the Class of 2023. Together, we were all immersed in the love that should always come with Thanksgiving.
Despite the cold and gloomy weather, students gathered in picnic-styled groups with beaming smiles. “I was grateful to be with all my friends,” Zoe Kakanakis ‘27 said.
Although this was just Fontbonne’s first Turkey Bowl, its success was incomparable. In deepening the companionship among all of the students, this event served as a great way to lead in the much-needed Thanksgiving break.
